If you ever spotted my husband and me out for an evening, you would immediately notice a contrast. We share a deep love for fine dining, world-class art, and luxury vacations. We appreciate true craftsmanship and never mind investing in quality. The difference? My husband always dresses the part to perfection. Meanwhile, you will reliably find me in blue jeans, a comfortable t-shirt, and flip-flops—no matter the venue. It did not take long for him to start teasing me with a nickname that stuck: The Unrefined Texan. It began as a playful jab, but behind that moniker is a lifelong creative journey shaped by curiosity, adaptation, and an enduring passion for making things that bring a little magic into the world.  

The Restless Crafter

I have always been a creative force. For as long as I can remember, making things with my hands has been my favorite way to interact with life. But living with ADHD meant my creative path was never a straight line. Instead of picking one discipline and staying there forever, I jumped enthusiastically from craft to craft. My drive was rarely about sticking with a single medium; it was about the thrill of discovery. I wanted to see if I could master something new, figure out how it worked, and push it to its limits. Once the mystery was solved, my restless imagination was ready for the next challenge.  

Discovering the Laser—and Pivoting Forward

That cycle shifted into high gear when I discovered laser cutting. I fell completely in love with the precision, the materials, and the endless possibilities of turning raw ideas into tangible objects. Before long, though, I ran headfirst into the reality of that marketplace. It is a fiercely competitive world, often crowded with identical items, copied designs, and stolen files. Competing in a relentless race to the bottom on pricing began draining the joy out of the work. Yet, every challenge opens a new door. While creating lifestyle photos to showcase my products, I discovered I had a real knack for describing vivid scenes to AI to generate rich, atmospheric backgrounds. What started as a way to stage my own work quickly evolved into its own venture: people loved the backgrounds, and I began selling them.  

Returning to Paper, Pencil, and Pure Imagination

Selling digital backgrounds was exciting, but it still did not fully satisfy the deeper itch in my creative soul. I needed an outlet that was purely artistic, personal, and expressive. I decided to go back to the very basics. I picked up a pencil and began sketching original concepts on paper, intending to paint them. But as time has passed, my hands are not quite as steady as they used to be. Rather than letting physical changes hold me back, I adapted. I took that raw creative energy and brought my pencil sketches into the digital realm. Working digitally gave me the freedom to refine, layer, and infuse every piece with rich color, depth, and detail. Once the digital preparation is complete, I partner with professional fine-art print labs to solidify those images into archival-grade, high-quality giclée fine-art prints. Every finished piece begins the old-fashioned way—with imagination, paper, and pencil—before transforming into a vibrant, one-of-a-kind work of art designed to last a lifetime.

Looking back at where this road began, the nickname my husband gave me feels more fitting than ever. I may still prefer my trusty denim and flip-flops over formal attire, but my art has found a home in the world of fine craft and elevated quality. I like to think of this new chapter as The Unrefined Texan | Refined—staying true to who I am while creating art that is sophisticated, colorful, and made to be cherished.
